The more I study this, the more I am convinced that God intended from the beginning to unite us as one with Him - Body, Soul, and Spirit.
As You have sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world, and I sanctify Myself for them, that they also may be sanctified in Truth. And I do not pray concerning these only, but also concerning those who will believe in Me through their word; that all may be one, as You are in Me, Father, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And I have given them the glory which You have given Me, that they may be one, as We are One: I in them, and You in Me, that they may be perfected in one; and that the world may know that You sent Me and loved them, even as You loved Me.
(Joh 17:18-23 LITV)
He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer.”
(Luk 22:15 ISV)
And taking a loaf, giving thanks, He broke, and gave to them, saying, This is My body being given for you. This do to My remembrance.
(Luk 22:19 LITV)
At the Passover supper where Jesus ate with His Disciples before he was betrayed in the Garden, Jesus prayed this prayer. His fervent desire was to be one with all people who believed and will believe in Him, just like He is One with God. Jesus reveals to us what God's desire has been from the beginning! God didn't want to be separated from His people anymore by sin and He knew that in order to do this, man would have to be given a new and perfected spirit, soul, and body - free from sin. Jesus, in the flesh, accomplished this by dying on the cross and resurrecting to new life!
…because whom He foreknew, He also predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son, for Him to be the First-born among many brothers.
(Rom 8:29 LITV)
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it was the good pleasure of the Father that in him should all the fulness dwell; and through him to reconcile all things unto himself, having made peace through the blood of his cross; through him, I say, whether things upon the earth, or things in the heavens. And you, being in time past alienated and enemies in your mind in your evil works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and without blemish and unreproveable before him:
(Col 1:18-22 ASV)
We were destined to be re-created (born again) from Jesus, formed to His image, and then to be joined to Him forever. From the death of Jesus - a "perfect" man, the Church was formed from His new body - a "new and perfect" woman. God did this just like he formed Eve from Adam.
And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept. And He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh underneath. And Jehovah God formed the rib which He had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. And the man said, This now at last is bone from my bones, and flesh from my flesh. For this shall be called Woman, because this has been taken out of man. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife and they shall become one flesh.
(Gen 2:21-24 LITV)
When Adam was asleep, God took one of his ribs and formed Eve. The term "asleep" or "sleep" is also used in scripture for a person who is dead.
And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
(Mat 27:52 LITV)
He said these things. And after this, He said to them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going that I may awaken him. Then His disciples said, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover. But Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that He spoke of the sleep of slumber. Therefore, then Jesus said to them plainly, Lazarus has died.
(Joh 11:11-14 LITV)
But now Christ has been raised from the dead; He became the firstfruit of those having fallen asleep.
(1Co 15:20 LITV)
When Adam woke up, God brought the woman to him and he fell instantly in love with her! He acknowledged that she was a part of his own body and he gave her a name from his own. Then he held her close, joining as one with her - the first marriage. When we accept Jesus as Lord of our life, then we become a part of His Body. He gives us His Name and His Love (a new Soul), and we are joined to Him by the Spirit He gives to us - a Spiritual Marriage!
“So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, man must never separate."
(Mat 19:6 ISV)
For the husband is the head of the wife, and Christ also is the head of the church, being himself the saviour of the body.
(Eph 5:23 ASV)
For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
(Eph 5:30-32 KJV)
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
(Act 4:32 KJV)
But he who is united to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
(1Co 6:17 MRC)
You, however, are not of the flesh but under the control of the Spirit, since God's Spirit lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, your bodies are dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, then the one who raised Christ from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive by his Spirit who lives in you.
(Rom 8:9-11 ISV)
This marriage of the Church to Jesus was not a new concept. God Himself gave the first example of being "married" to His people - the children of Israel - in the book of Exodus.

Three make One!
God and Jesus testify of the Holy Spirit and their relationship with Him, so there should be no doubt that the Holy Spirit is a part of "Them" because "They" said so themselves!
From my previous studies, I now understood how God’s oneness is made up of the union of the three that were there from the beginning: God the Father (Our Creator who loves us), God the Son (His Word that became flesh), and God the Holy Spirit (His Wisdom and Breath of life). In Genesis, it states that we were created in the image of God (see Genesis 1:27). So, if God has three parts to His being, then we also have three parts to our being. The Bible confirms this by explaining how we have a soul, a body, and a spirit.
But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
(Job 14:22 KJV)
And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
(Gen 6:3 KJV)
Thus saith God the LORD, He that created the heavens, and stretched them forth, He that spread forth the earth and that which cometh out of it, He that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
(Isa 42:5 JPS)
May the God of peace himself make you holy in every way. And may your whole being-spirit, soul, and body-be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(1Th 5:23 ISV)
Our being is made up of a body of flesh that contains within it a soul and spirit.
With my soul I desire You in the night; yea, with my spirit within me I diligently seek You. For when Your judgments are in the earth, those living in the world learn righteousness.
(Isa 26:9 LITV)
The soul is where a man’s desire of God is formed and the spirit of a man is what seeks after the knowledge of God.
So, by listing out God’s traits next to our being’s traits, this is how I believe we match up to His Image:
God’s Being:
Son (Word made flesh)
Father (Love)
Holy Spirit (Wisdom)
Our being :
body (flesh)
soul (desire)
spirit (knowledge)
What a perfect match! God purposely designed and crafted us to be like Him - with three parts! We are the only creation He made to match up with Him. I believe God purposely revealed Himself to us as three persons and created us with the same three parts in order to show us how we can relate to Him. He created us with all of the parts that we needed to be able to love Him completely - with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. I also believe He created us this way in order to reveal to us how He intended from the beginning to unite us to Him.
